Splice Creative have worked with Thorns DIY in Norwich for a number of years on their website and they approached us to design and launch a brand new online retail e-commerce site at the end of 2019.
As an independent, family run DIY store, Thorns DIY have traded online for sometime but wanted to take advantage of new and more responsive technology, that was not only user friendly for their customers but also for their own administration at the back end. Splice Creative utilised the Shopify platform to help Thorns achieve their goal with a website that enables easy uploading or change of products, collections and straightforward reliable processing of customer orders.
The timing for the new site proved to be perfect as not long after it had bedded in, the COVID-19 lockdown occurred. Thorns DIY kept trading online and almost immediately traffic to the site rocketed. On 25th March 2020, they received over 9,000 page views in one day compared to a few dozen per day on the old platform on the same date the previous year.
In the first six months of 2020, Thorns have seen a year-on-year increase in page views of more than 7,000%. The pandemic clearly accentuated the rise in traffic but Thorns now have a great and busy new sales channel with a significant amount of returning local and national customers.
The site looks great, reflecting on Thorns existing distinctive branding that echoes the heritage of their business but with the powerful functionality of online shopping today, allowing Thorns DIY to continue to deliver their products to customers across the country.
